'We are delighted to develop our links with The SPACE there is a real need for practical courses that develop students' skills and awareness of the rewarding careers available in the technical and production side of the Arts and Entertainment Industry. To train on a course connected with a theatre venue offers the best opportunity to learn and then apply what you've learned in a work environment'.
“When built, The SPACE will create an unmatchable asset to Taunton. Within the live events industry young talent is urgently needed – this is a shortage skills area. The SPACE will give the opportunity for youngsters to have practical training in the technical side of events and will hopefully be successful in creating a much needed influx of young talent into the events industry. There is simply no better way of learning technical theatre/events except for on-the-job training which The SPACE will provide. Needless to say, the building itself is a stunning piece of architecture, sitting next to The Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre, Heathfield Community School will have arts facilities which are second-to-none for students aged 16-19.
“The things we look for when recruiting are: is the person creative; is the person personable; are they presentable, are they team players, can they think “outside the box”, can they interact successfully with clients, consultants and building contractors and can they listen?”!
“We recruit from both Schools of Architecture and from further education and therefore would consider a student with an Advanced Level C & M Diploma a very worthy student to interview - we may offer to support a student from post-16 to qualify as a Chartered Architect!”
I think The SPACE is going to be a real hot spot for developing talent, as far too often I find young people fresh from college joining the YPFC with little hands-on experience, tending to have to ask and check along every step of the way; The SPACE offers a training ground to encounter and learn to cope with day-to-day real-life situations which will no doubt allow the students to start confidently and intuitively in a working environment. In my opinion as an employer for film-making, this type of learning puts far more faith in me than seeing a mark for a written exam.'
